Juna’s grogginess faded as the sterile white walls of the recovery room sharpened into focus. A doctor hovered over her, his cream-colored face filled with concern.

“Juna? How are you feeling?”

“Tired,” she murmured.

The doctor hesitated, his expression tightening. “I’m afraid I have bad news.”

“What?”

“We couldn’t fit your cybernetic leg. Only ten percent of these procedures fail, but unfortunately, you’re in that minority.”

Her breath hitched. “What does that mean?”

“It means you’ll need to let your leg heal naturally. We’ve injected bone-healing nanites into the fracture to speed up the process.”

“But that’s... that’s expensive Lleronese tech.”

The doctor nodded. “Your friend, Rojas, covered it.”

Her stomach churned. She curled her shoulders inward, heat rising to her face. It wasn’t fair. She hadn’t asked for his charity. “He didn’t even tell me.”

“Without his support, we’d have had to remove more bone marrow from your hip,” the doctor added. “You should rest and eat. Your father will visit during the next few hours.”

Juna nodded mechanically, her thoughts spinning. She’d imagined striding confidently into the Android Recovery Centre with her new leg, a symbol of resilience. Now, she’d return in a hoverchair, vulnerable and exposed. The thought made her stomach knot even tighter.
